Police Find Body Inside Burning Car In Olney

By Tim Jimenez, Jan Carabeo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Police say they found a dead body in a car that was set on fire Wednesday night in the Olney section of Philadelphia.

It was close to 8 p.m. when police say they found a black Mitsubishi Galant on fire in the alley on the 6100 block of North Lawrence Street. Investigators say they found a man's body in the passenger side. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say that man may have been the victim of a shooting they were investigating earlier on the 400 block of Roselyn Street, which is only a few blocks away. Authorities say that shooting was reported at around 4 p.m. but they did not find a victim at the time.

Witnesses on Roselyn Street describe seeing that very same car that was discovered later engulfed in flames.

"They said that there was a male sitting in the passenger seat of a black Mitsubishi who had been shot in the head and the driver drove off, east, on Roselyn Street," Chief Inspector Scott Small says.

Police say it's unclear if the man found in the burning car had a gunshot wound as he was burned beyond recognition.

No arrests have been made.

It'll now be up to medical examiners office to determine the cause of death as the investigation continues.
