Blending The Best Philadelphia Has To Offer -- Inside And Outside The Classroom

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Nonprofits and educators are getting together Friday to begin creating a curriculum that blends formal education with informal learning outside the classroom.

It's like a field trip that doesn't end -- integrating the experiences that organizations -- including the Pennsylvania Ballet and the Penn Museum -- can offer, with a formal science, technology, engineering and math curriculum.

The project is devising a curriculum from the ground up, Merlino says:

"The idea is to take advantage of this talent. And have them think of how you do an informal design -- how you use the informal world as a part of the formal."

The goal is to create a curriculum to be piloted at two or three Philadelphia public high schools.
