Black Bear Roaming Bensalem Euthanized
By Jim Melwert
BENSALEM, Pa. (CBS) -- A black bear that had been spotted several times around Bensalem, Bucks County over the weekend was caught overnight -- but had to be euthanized.
Bensalem Public Safety Director Fred Herron said when Pennsylvania Game Commission officials caught the bear it had a broken leg and had to be "put down." Harron said investigators believe the bear may have been struck by a car.
Game Commission officials had set traps for the bear with donuts coated in maple syrup as bait.
The bear was first spotted near the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Bensalem on Friday. Crews tried to catch the animal, but it gave them the slip in some woods (see related story).
It was spotted again Sunday in a park and near the Bucks Meadow apartment complex.
Harran said the animal was euthanized after it was found behind the former Nifty Fifty's restaurant on Sunday night.
