Bassmaster Elite Challengers Bait Their Hooks For Delaware River Competition

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- It may not be common knowledge, but the Delaware River is full of fish. Later this summer, a hundred of the nation's top anglers will be catching bass for a competition.

"There are a lot of spots. I mean, you know right there under the Tacony Bridge is a new pier they built, and that's a good spot," said one fisherman trying his luck on the river.

Amateur fishermen along the Delaware River say there's a bevy of bass in the river, and they don't mind sharing with the top anglers who will be in boats competing in the Bassmaster Elite on August 7th through 10th.

One local fisherman said the pros may even be challenged with the tidal fluctuations of the river.

Larry Needle with the Philadelphia Sports Congress says it's a great opportunity to watch some of the best in the sport.

"The public would have a chance to get out on the river to see their favorite angler in action, and they would be able to come to Penn's Landing later in the day to see the weigh-in, enjoy an expo, and other activities that will be going on at Penn's Landing all weekend," he said.

This competition is one of several in the 2014 Bassmaster Elite Series.
