Baby-Friendly Not So Friendly For Some Moms

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It is called the baby-friendly program and the odds are you probably don't know what it is but, if you are pregnant and planning to deliver in a hospital, it could be an important thing to know about.

On the surface it seems like a good idea: the concept is to encourage mothers to breastfeed and there are many good reasons including improved immunity for the baby, excellent bonding and even some studies that suggest the chances of obesity and type two diabetes could be reduced. But, those who argue against the program suggest the numerous rules that hospitals must follow with everything from elimination of free formula samples to eliminating the term nursery and having doctors write orders for formula as if it were a medication.

Certainly breast feeding is a great option but for those who struggle or simply want the option of formula, they can be made to feel very uncomfortable.

Clearly you should talk to your obstetrician and not feel pressure one way or the other.
