Angie's List: Alarm Systems More Affordable, Easier To Install
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Home alarm systems can provide a sense of security for many homeowners, and now they're more affordable and easier to install than ever.
In this week's Angie's List report, a look at do it yourself security systems.
Martha Pfleeger decided to install a security system in her new home.
"It's a new area to us and we've got two kids, so having a security system just feels safer to us," said Pfleeger.
To save money the Pfleeger family opted for a do it yourself system.
"DIY security systems have become much more affordable. You can get a typical system for less than 200 dollars and that's going to include door and window sensors, motion sensors and an audible alarm," said Angie's List founder, Angie Hicks.
"Homeowners should consider all of the entry points in their home when selecting components for a burglar alarm. Typically your first floor windows are accessible from the outside and you want protection on those and, of course, all the doors that lead to the outside," said Will Deines with Simplisafe.
If you just want your system to act as alarm to scare burglars you don't need it to be monitored. But many DIY systems do allow for professional monitoring to be added so police are called when the system is triggered.
"A DIY system can provide your home extra security and can be easy to install, but if you want constant surveillance, you need to consult with a professional," said Hicks.
While home monitoring does mean an extra monthly bill, It can provide peace of mind and it may also get you a discount on your homeowner's insurance.
