PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- "He's fighting for his life..."
Janet and Bob Wilson say it's "touch and go" after their five-year-old miniature poodle named "Chicago" was attacked by an unleashed dog.
Janet says, "I'm traumatized, I can see that dog on top of him."
It happened at their apartment complex in the Northeast Tuesday evening.
"He had Chicago in his mouth like he was a rag doll," says Janet.
Janet was coming up these stairs when the dog came from another apartment complex and attacked Chicago right here, in front of the Wilson's apartment.
"I started to hit the dog with my hand, then I took my foot was kicking him and I was screaming for my husband, 'Bob, Bob come out here," Janet says.
Janet even tried beating the other dog would this broom but nothing stopped it until the dog's owner came.
We spoke with a witness who did not want to show her face.
She said the owner of the attacking dog grabbed it by it's neck and walked away.
"Finally released it and just to act like it was nothing."
Janet says, "A witness asked her, 'where's the leash for that dog?' She said she didn't have a leash."
Chicago was taken to this veterinary hospital.
Robert Orsher of Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center says,"I don't even know if Chicago is going to make it or not."
The dog suffered skin and nerve damage.
Dr. Orsher says, "He was picked up and shaken by the other dog and there is injury the nerves of the left leg."
The Wilson's say Chicago is more than a pet.
"He's like our child," says Bob.
Janet adds, "People need to be responsible for their pets."
We tried to talk to the dog's owner but no one answered.
Janet says, "They need to have them on a leash. This could've happened to a child with a dog."
The Wilson's have filed a police report.
Now they're hoping Chicago pulls through.
