3.1 Million Tommee Tippee Sippee Cups Recalled Due To Mold
PHILADELPHIA (CNN)-- Mayborn USA has issued a voluntary recall of 3.1 million Tommee Tippee Sippee children's spill-proof cups because of mold, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Friday.
Five types of 7- and 10-ounce cups are affected: First Sips Transition cups, Trainer Sippee cups, Sippee cups, Sportee bottles and Insulated Swiggle/Sippee tumblers. The cups are made for children ages 4 to 12 months old.
All of them have a white one-piece removable valve.
"Mold can develop on the removable, one-piece, white valve inside the spill-proof Tommee Tippee Sippee cups when it remains wet/moist and is infrequently cleaned," according to the recall announcement.
There have been more than 3,000 consumer reports of mold in the valves, including 68 reports of illnesses consistent with drinking from a cup with mold. This can include vomiting and diarrhea.
In February, a social media storm began swirling among parents who discovered mold in these cups. They began posting pictures on the Tommee Tippee Facebook page. At the time, the company said it had plans to launch a new cup in the coming months.
These cups were sold between December 2014 and May 2016 in the U.S. and Canada.
Consumers are advised to stop using cups with a one-piece white valve. The company will replace the cups for free.
