Vault Explosion Leaves 900 Without Power In Santa Monica

SANTA MONICA (CBSLA.com) — A surge that set off an explosion in an underground vault left more than 900 Santa Monica residents without power Sunday night.

The explosion was reported around 9:45 p.m. at Ocean Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard, the Santa Monica Fire Department said.

KNX 1070's Brian Ping reports the bulk of the outage was in the 1100 and 1200 blocks of Ocean Avenue and the 1100 block of Second Street.

Jim Choi was among those who was in line for the Pier's roller coaster when everything suddenly went dark.

"While we were waiting, the power just went out," Choi said. "There was a little confusion at the beginning, everybody remained pretty orderly.

Riders had just finished riding the coaster when the outage hit and nobody was stuck, according to Choi.

Power was restored to 949 customers as of 3 a.m. Monday, Edison said.

The cause of the outage was still unknown as of Monday morning.
