1 Killed, 8 Injured In Rollover Crash In North Hills

NORTH HILLS (CBSLA.com/AP) — A 37-year-old man was killed and eight people, including four children, were injured Sunday when an SUV fleeing a previous crash collided with a minivan in the San Fernando Valley, authorities said.

The crash happened about 11:39 a.m. Sunday in the 8700 block of Haskell Avenue in North Hills.

The dead man had been inside the Toyota Sienna minivan, which landed upside-down and badly crushed with multiple people ejected. The four children, three siblings and a family friend whose ages range from 4 to 12, were all in the van along with two other adults.

A friend told CBS Los Angeles the man was headed to a baby shower with his family when they were hit.

One woman and one man were in the Toyota 4Runner SUV, which was speeding away from the scene of a previous accident when the collision occurred, police Sgt. Frank Preciado said.

Helicopters were used to fly some of the children to hospitals, and ground ambulances took the other patients to emergency rooms.

The man who was killed was declared dead at a hospital, police said.

KCAL9's Cristy Fajardo reported from the scene Sunday evening.

She said it was "the type of case police say they think about long after the scene is cleared."

Two of the injured children are reportedly in grave condition as is the dead man's wife.

"I'm confused, very confused," said Nabu Hernandez.

He came to the scene looking for answers. He told Fajardo his wife is friend of the victims' and was supposed to meet them at the baby shower.

Hernandez also told Fajardo the family lived less than a block from there the 4Runner driver plowed into them.

Police described the driver of the 4Runner as a woman in her 20s. She was being tested for drugs and alcohol.

Police told Fajardo is she tests positive for either she could be charged with murder.

The woman and her two passengers were also badly injured -- one of them ejected on impact.
