Suspect Assaults, Robs Elderly Man At Hammond, Ind. Train Station

(CBS) -- An elderly man was assaulted and robbed at a train station Thursday morning in northwest Indiana.

The attack happened at the South Shore Station at 4531 Hammond Ave. in Hammond, Ind. at 8:39 a.m., according to a release from the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District police.

The 84-year-old man had just bought a newspaper inside the station when he was assaulted and his wallet was stolen, police said.

The man suffered "minor injuries" but declined medical treatment, police said.

"He just come up on me and grabbed me, trying to get into my pockets. The next thing you know I was on the ground and we're still fighting," the victim tells CBS 2's Pamela Jones.

The victim tells CBS 2 he won't let the crime stop him from going about his regular business.

Police released surveillance video of the suspect Friday.

"We're hoping that with this video that somebody will recognize the offender and call the transit police," Chief Robert Byrd of the NICTD Police says.

The suspect ran south on Johnson Avenue after the robbery. Hammond police searched the area with a K-9 unit, but the suspect was not found.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call police at (219) 398-6000.
