Hammond Woman Shot And Killed At Her Home

HAMMOND, Ind. (STMW) -- Northwest Indiana man is in critical condition after allegedly shooting his wife to death before turning the gun on himself Saturday night in Hammond.

Renata Marquez, 37, shared a home with her mother, 38-year-old husband and 4-year-old daughter in the 2000 block of Lincoln Street in Hammond, according to the Lake County, Ind., Coroner's office and Hammond police Lt. Richard Hoyda.

Marquez's mother heard the couple fighting about 11:45 p.m. and called the man to see if anything was wrong, Hoyda said. The 38-year-old said everything was fine, but when the fighting continued, the older woman went to the married couple's part of the house to check, he said.

The woman found her daughter shot to death, with her granddaughter and the 38-year-old nearby, Hoyda said.

The woman grabbed the girl, ran from the house and dialed 911, Hoyda said.

When police arrived, the man shot himself, Hoyda said. He was taken to a trauma center at an Illinois hospital where he remained in critical condition Sunday afternoon.

Hoyda said Hammond police are monitoring the man's condition as they continue to investigate, and charges may be filed against the man next week if his condition improves.
