Hammond School Superintendent Robbed And Beaten

HAMMOND, Ind. (CBS) -- The head of the Hammond public school system was beaten and robbed Monday night at his home.

Police said Walter Watkins' sister stopped by his house Tuesday morning to bring him breakfast, and noticed evidence of a break-in. She found her Watkins inside, suffering from head injuries.

Investigators believe someone broke in between 9:30 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. Tuesday while the power was out, and robbed and beat Watkins.

Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. says Watkins is very well liked and didn't deserve this.

"It was definitely a punch in the gut. It was definitely disheartening for me as the mayor. You got these animals that have no respect for human life," said McDermott.

Watkins' black 2013 Ford Edge also was stolen. The vehicle is owned by the school district, and has Indiana license plate 20680.

Watkins was being treated at the hospital and has been discharged.
