One Man Killed, One Critically Wounded In Chatham Shooting

CHICAGO (CBS) -- One man was killed and another was critically wounded Thursday afternoon in the Chatham neighborhood.

The shooting happened at 4:29 p.m. near a nail salon on 79th Street just west of Cottage Grove Avenue, on the cusp of the Chatham and Grand Crossing communities.

The men, both 25, were standing on the sidewalk when an assailant came out of an alley and started shooting at them, police said.

One of the men was struck in the abdomen and arm and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The other was struck in the neck, leg, and back and was taken to the same hospital in critical condition.

No one was in custody early Thursday evening. Area Two detectives were investigating.

Following the shooting, 79th Street was closed in both directions west of Cottage Grove Avenue
