Construction Worker Killed In Crash On I-65 In Hobart

HOBART, Ind.(CBS) -- A construction worker was killed Wednesday morning after being struck by an SUV that drove into a construction area on I-65 in northwest Indiana.

A 23-year-old woman lost control around 9:30 a.m. of her 2013 GMC SUV north on I-65 about one mile south of the Ridge Road exit in Hobart, said Indiana State Police Sergeant Ann Wojas. The woman was switching lanes when she hit a construction barrel separating traffic from a construction area.

"After she hit that barrel she went into the construction area, hit a second barrel and there was a worker that was right there," Wojas said. "[She] hit that worker, which threw him into her windshield."

The worker hit a pickup that was behind him in the construction area, Wojas said, and then eventually landed about 100 feet from that truck.

The worker, identified as 35-year-old Brandon Beau Dewayne Fiscus of LaPorte, Indiana, suffered massive blunt force trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:30 a.m., according to the Lake County coroner's office. His manner of death is pending.

All northbound lanes were closed for more than two hours after the crash.

The construction in the area has been ongoing since May, Wojas said, and is marked off with signage, as well as barrels and cones.

Police did not say whether or not the driver would be charged.
