Juvenile arrested after antisemitic messages found in Highland Park

Antisemitic vandalism found in Highland Park

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (CBS) -- Police in Highland Park arrested a juvenile offender after a report of antisemitic vandalism.

According to the city, the offender defaced a garbage can with "blue painter's tape in the form of a swastika, Star of David, and the word 'Jew.'"

Police said the suspect was taken into custody on Tuesday. The City said they coordinated with the Lake County State's Attorney's Office on charges, but due to the suspect's age cannot release details.

The city said quick reporting by residents helped with the quick identification and arrest of the suspect.

Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering issued a statement on Friday saying, "This act of hatred, bigotry, and cowardice has no place in our community. I condemn it in the strongest terms possible."
