2 Teens Die, 5 Hurt In High-Speed Crash In East Chicago

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (AP) -- Police say two teens have died after a high-speed, one-vehicle crash in East Chicago that also injured five others.

East Chicago police chief Mark Becker says the vehicle's driver and a front-seat passenger died in the crash about 3 a.m. Sunday. The Lake County coroner's office in northwest Indiana identified them as 18-year-old Marco Alvarado of East Chicago and 17-year-old Eric Rodriguez.

According to Becker, the vehicle was going more than 90 mph when the driver lost control and struck a utility pole. He says it rolled on its side before hitting and shearing off another pole, which fell on top of the vehicle.

Becker says three other teens suffered serious injuries. He says another appeared to be in good condition, and a seventh who walked away from the crash later sought treatment.
