Police officers shot a man while responding to a shots-fired call in East Chicago, Indiana Tuesday night.
One of the shootings happened during a large party in an alley. In the other, a 12-year-old boy's family told police they were setting off fireworks when he apparently was hit by a stray bullet.
Ja'Niyah McMichael, now 14, was reported missing by her mother on Aug. 12 from their home in the 1900 block of Malcolm X Boulevard. The FBI says McMichael has known connections to Gary and East Chicago, Indiana.
The shooting happened around 10:50 p.m. Friday at the Speedway gas station at 3956 Guthrie Street.
East Chicago police said around 11:16 a.m., officers responded to the 3700 block of Dahlia Street for a report of shots fired.
Witnesses said that the victim was involved in an argument that turned physical with his wife when he reached for a weapon. At that time, the son shot his father to protect his mother.
