2 Killed In Boat Crash On Lake Michigan
(CBS) – A boating crash on Lake Michigan killed two men, including a labor union representative who also served as a suburban village trustee.
It happened not far from the East Chicago, Ind. marina.
CBS 2's Jeremy Ross reports.
The damaged boat was pulled from the water Saturday afternoon and suspended on a lift. Part of its bottom was gutted in some kind of high-speed collision.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says the 42-foot craft hit a break wall between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m.
"We think the major contributing factors are going to be speed, low visibility and alcohol," DNR officer Tyler Brock says.
A third man managed to survive the crash, get to the break wall and call for help.
"Given that the other two didn't make, it seems he's very lucky," Brock says.
Killed were Timothy Dunlap, 62, a village of Lynwood trustee and vice president of Teamsters Local 731, and Richard Wade of Hammond, Ind., 68, who is described as an experienced boater.
"I'm feeling pretty rough," says Nick Trgovich, who works at the marina and knows both men.
Teamsters Local 731 said Dunlap was "a very charitable and hard-working man" and will be missed.
The man who survived suffered minor injuries. An investigation continues.
