Watch: Coral spawning phenomenon
Divers in Key Largo, Fla. caught a glimpse of the yearly coral spawning, when coral reefs release millions of eggs and sperm underwater. Once the reproductive cells unite, most of the newly formed larvae rise to the surface to free-float in the current for days or sometimes weeks. Coral spawning is crucial for the survival of coral reefs around the world and occurs in August and September a few days after the full moon.
