"48 Hours correspondent Erin Moriarty investigates. | EDITOR'S NOTE: In 2020, Virginia Vertetis' murder conviction was overturned on appeal. The appellate court concluded that the jury was improperly instructed on the state's self-defense law. In 2021, Vertetis pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of aggravated manslaughter. A judge sentenced her to 20 years in prison. However, an appeals court later overturned this sentence stating in their ruling that the judge had wrongly based the sentence on aggravating factors that were not supported by the evidence.
