X Games To North Texas?
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS) - Texas Motor Speedway is hoping to lure in big money and the spotlight when it comes to extreme sports.
The speedway is bidding to host ESPN's Summer X Games in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
"The X Games are really young people's Olympics," says Eddie Gossage President of Texas Motor Speedway. "This is Super Bowl like."
More than 200 athletes from across the world take part in an action-packed week of competitions including extreme rally car races, BMX bike events and skateboarding.
"We got the biggest stadium in the state of Texas. We can put a variety of venues in this facility and easily host the X Games over a several day period," says Gossage.
Gossage says they're in the business of putting on big events and they can easily build music stages and even an area for fashion shows.
TMS seats nearly 140,000 and sits on 100 acres of property.
The four day event attracts between 80,000 to 100,000 people.
TMS is competing with 17 other cities, including Austin and Houston.
Last summer, when Los Angeles hosted the games it brought the city more than 17 million dollars.
At Pier Skatepark in Kennedale, extreme skateboarders couldn't be more thrilled and say the X games couldn't come soon enough to North Texas.
"You see it on TV, and it's one thing. But to actually experience it, it's a whole new thing," says Vaughn West from Grand Prairie. "It will be really good for the scene, and a lot of kids need to experience it first hand."
TMS could get word by this spring if the games are coming to North Texas.
