Wylie ISD Schools Locked Down After Shots Reported Nearby

MURPHY (CBSDFW.COM) - Two elementary schools in the Wylie Independent School District were placed on lockdown for a short time on Tuesday afternoon while police in Murphy investigated reports of a shooting nearby.

Chief G.M. Cox with the Murphy Police Department said that a resident reported the sound of shots fired near both Tibbals Elementary School and Groves Elementary School, so both campuses were put on lockdown.

"The best we can tell, we have a shots fired call working in the 500 block of Windward, which is a street in Murphy close to Tibbals Elementary, which is part of the Wylie Independent School District," Cox said. "We've been notified the school district is on lockdown, and we have both Murphy officers and Wylie officers in the area looking for a suspect."

During that search, Cox said that parents should not be overly concerned about the safety of their kids. "We would prefer that they not respond to the lockdown, obviously that creates traffic problems for us if we have to get into the area," he said. "While I try not to speak for Wylie ISD, I think I have a pretty good idea of what they would like. If we could just have everybody just stand by, we are in the area searching and we should have some feedback here shortly."

"Of course," Cox added, "Wylie ISD makes the calls for their schools, and their school district's policies and plans will be implemented."

The lockdown was lifted less than an hour after it began. Police found nothing in the area.
