WWII Veteran Finally Receives Bronze Star
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - A group of residents in Arlington spent Memorial Day morning honoring our service men and women. The ceremony included a special moment for an 89-year-old World War II veteran, and a delivery decades in the making.
Ten veterans staying at a North Texas adult care facility took part in the event. Among the group was a soldier who finally received a medal that he earned nearly 70 years ago. Augustine Solis served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Back in 1945, he and his platoon slept in a foxhole for several days during a battle in the Philippines. Solis earned a Bronze Star, but never received it.
The veteran's daughter did some digging and, after a year's worth of phone calls and paperwork, the actual medal arrived last month. In front of several family members and his wife of 67 years, Solis was honored on Monday. "I was real excited," Solis said. "I didn't know what to expect, to tell you the truth."
The decorated veteran said that he grew up fast at the age of 18, and remembers losing several comrades during the war. Memorial Day is always a special time for him, he said, giving him a moment to reflect upon the men and women who lost their lives defending our nation.
