Wrong-Way Driver Killed In Fort Worth Crash
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A wrong-way driver was killed early Wednesday morning after a crash along Loop 820 in northwest Fort Worth. The incident happened at around 3:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the highway, near Marine Creek Parkway.
Two police officers in separate squad cars came dangerously close to the driver as he zipped past them in the wrong direction.
Authorities do not know why the driver of an Isuzu Trooper was heading the wrong direction. Officials said that he entered the freeway at White Settlement Road and traveled for about seven miles before slamming into two other vehicles. The violent crash also involved a panel truck and a sedan which was carrying a mother and daughter.
The wrong-way driver died at the scene. One of the women inside of the sedan was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The other woman had minor injuries. But the driver of the panel truck was transported to the hospital via air ambulance in critical condition. "He was between the dashboard and the seat of the vehicle," said Matt Zad with MedStar. "About 40 minutes for the Fort Worth Fire Department and us to extricate him out of the vehicle."
The panel truck belongs to roofing company DK Haney. The company's owner said that his employee has serious injuries to his legs. That driver is going through surgery, however, and is expected to be okay.
The names of the victims have not been released, but one of the injured women is pregnant, police said.
Authorities are waiting for toxicology test results to determine if the wrong-way driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
All westbound lanes of Loop 820 were shut down while law enforcement officials investigated the case and crews worked to clean up the mess. This created a massive traffic backup along the frontage road and other surrounding roadways. The highway has since opened up again, but you can always check our traffic map for alternate routes.
