Wrong-Way Driver Causes Fatal Crash In Dallas
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Two people died after a car crash caused by a wrong-way driver along Interstate-45, south of downtown Dallas. The incident happened at about 2:30 a.m. early Friday morning in the northbound lanes of Interstate-45, near Loop 12.
Authorities first received reports about a wrong-way driver in a red pickup truck when he was about three miles away from the eventual crash site. The red truck was reportedly dodging vehicles in the northbound lanes, traveling south at about 70 mph. Police are not yet sure where the driver entered the freeway.
The red pickup truck then slammed into a silver Nissan, officials said, flipping the struck vehicle and killing the male driver, identified as Luis Alvarado, instantly. Some motorists were actually on the phone with the police when the crash took place.
The driver of the red pickup truck, identified as Joseph Macias, was taken to a local hospital. His condition is unknown. Authorities have not yet determined why Macias was traveling the wrong direction along the freeway, however, he has a previous DUI arrest from March 1997. Police believe that alcohol may have been a factor in this case.
Two passengers in the silver Nissan were injured and rushed to a nearby hospital, one in "very critical condition," according to authorities on the scene. That passenger was later pronounced dead on Friday afternoon. The condition of the other passenger is not known.
