Wrong-Way Crash Kills 2 Drivers In Grand Prairie
GRAND PRAIRIE (CBSDFW.COM) - Police in Grand Prairie are investigating a wrong-way crash along Highway 287 that killed two people on Thursday morning and shut down the highway for nearly five hours. It happened at about 1:00 a.m. in the northbound lanes of traffic, in a very dark part of the highway.
According to authorities, a 2005 Kia Amanti was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes when it collided head-on with a 1997 Honda CRV. A fire erupted and both drivers died on the scene. The Honda driver has been identified as 20-year-old Alex Elizabeth Ford of Watauga. The Kia driver has been named as 46-year-old John Layton of Mansfield. There were no other passengers inside either vehicle.
A witness spotted the wrong-way vehicle back at Highway 360, which is about two miles away from the crash scene. This area of highway is not well lit, and officials have wondered if Layton even knew that he was traveling in the wrong direction. The speed limit along this stretch of roadway is 65 mph.
Highway 287 was closed for nearly five hours overnight while police were on the scene. Lanes were opened to traffic again later Thursday morning.
