Wounded Warriors "Fall" From Fort Worth Sky
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS) - A special group of thrill-seekers soared through the skies over Fort Worth, as members of the all-veterans parachute team took some fellow warriors "falling."
Dave Herwig calls it "therapy in the air." Herwig and his team give wounded warriors a chance to jump from a plane…with only one simple job to do.
"Let 'em relax for a day and feel the ride of free flight," said Herwig.
Today's tandem jump at 8500 feet will be Corporal Nick Perales' first-ever sky dive.
"It's definitely something I've wanted to do. I'm a big thrill seeker," said Perales. "I'm not really nervous or anything."
Perales, an army private, stepped on a roadside bomb in February 2011, resulting in multiple fractures of his arm and partial amputation of his right leg. After suiting up and a few words of instruction, Perales is flying through the sky.
Herwig says taking fellow vets skydiving is the best part of his job.
"Continue to do what we like to do and jump...and continue to give back and serve the public and give back to our wounded warriors and to our veterans."
The all-veteran parachute team, a group of former and current military members, is in North Texas for the Sky Ball event, which raises funds for military charities. The event is Saturday, October 5, at the American Airlines hanger at DFW Airport.
