FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — A Fort Worth police officer has improved but remains in critical condition after being shot multiple times during a gun battle that left a suspect dead.
Police spokeswoman Cpl. Tracey Knight said Monday that Officer Matt Pearce has shown small signs of improvement and remains hospitalized in Fort Worth.
Officers were trying to arrest Ed McIver Sr. last Tuesday, on aggravated assault charges and for jumping bail, when gunfire broke out as he fled with his adult son. McIver Sr. was killed by police. Pearce was wounded.
After an hours long manhunt, the suspect's son, Ed McIver Jr., was captured and arrested. The 20-year-old remains jailed on charges of Attempted Capital Murder, Evading Arrest, Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon and Drug Possession.
Weapons were recovered from both suspects. Investigators are trying to determine who shot Pearce.
Friends of Officer Pearce started a GoFundMe page to raise money for him and his family. Over the weekend Pearce's wife updated the page saying that doctors performed a diagnostic test and believe her husband suffered a 'pseudoaneurysm,' which is a blood clot that forms as a result of a leaking hole in an artery.
His wife went on to say that doctors think the bullet either grazed Pearce's aorta or impact from the blast injured the artery. She said doctors would be performing more tests today.
