***UPDATE*** 10:56 AM, Thursday, January 15 -   Morgan Lyons with DART confirms that an arrest has been made related to the January 6 stabbing at the Pearl Street DART Station. MORE DETAILS HERE.

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A woman was stabbed in downtown Dallas early Tuesday morning after leaving a train at the Pearl Street station, confirmed an official with Dallas Area Rapid Transit.

The assault happened at about 5:30 a.m. just after the woman walked off of a train at the station, stated Mark Ball with DART. Her attacker exited the same train from a different door. He walked past the woman, but then turned and came after her from behind, fleeing the scene on foot.

Ball said that the woman was on her way to another train to continue her commute.

The woman was taken to Baylor Medical Center at Dallas with stab wounds to both her face and neck. Her condition is not known, but Ball does not believe that her injuries are life threatening. The victim's name has not been released.

DART police officers and the Dallas Police Department are conducting an investigation into the attack. So far, there has been only vague information released about the suspect -- a black male between 35 and 45 years of age, approximately 240 pounds and between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet tall. The motive for the attack is not known.

The incident was captured by surveillance cameras, and investigators are still reviewing that video to get a good look at the suspect.

Meanwhile, DART train operations were suspended in the downtown Dallas area early Tuesday morning. Shuttle buses were called to the Victory, West End, Deep Ellum and Cityplace stations to replace the trains. All operations have since returned to the normal schedule.

Nearly 30,000 people use the DART trains on a typical weekday morning, with the downtown area being a primary hub for travelers all over the Metroplex, from Fort Worth to Rowlett.

For early morning commuters like Rita Rodriguez, the news of this attack is especially scary. "Sometimes, when you're walking," she said, "you hear those footsteps behind you, you turn around and look and it's just another person walking with you. But you never know."

Despite the frightening nature of the attack, Ball was quick to assure customers that DART was still safe. "DART is one of the safest transit systems in America," Ball explained. "Compared to other systems, our crime rate is very low. We're optimistic that we'll be able to solve this very quickly."
