DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A woman is recovering at the hospital after being shot in the leg early on Monday at her northeast Dallas apartment, according to police. The incident happened shortly before 12:30 a.m. in the 12500 block of Audelia Road.

Authorities said a man approached the woman in the parking lot of the gated Huntington Brook Apartments.  She was walking toward her apartment after a shopping trip when the man started to follow. The woman tried to get away, but was ultimately shot in the leg inside of her apartment unit after a brief struggle.

Neighbors at the apartment complex said that they heard loud banging and, then, shots being fired.

"For that lady to just be walking into the house and somebody just follow her like that, maybe somebody actually watching her the whole time," said resident Johnny Breweh.

Another resident who talked to CBS 11 didn't want to share his name out of fear.

"I have a wife and four kids and it concerns me a lot to know it happened close by my house," the man said.

The 33-year-old victim was rushed by ambulance to a hospital and is expected to survive.  She told authorities she did not know her attacker.  Her name has not been released.

Resident Thecla Egbe said she wishes her apartment complex would do more to deter this sort of crime. "I would like to see them keep some watch, set up security men around."

Investigators spent several hours at the scene. According to authorities, there was no sexual assault, and the incident is believed to be a robbery attempt. It is not clear why the man targeted the woman, but the suspect is still loose. Officials have not released a description of that man.

Janice Fowler is at the apartment complex every day to visit a friend. She is now worried after the attack. "That's really scary," she said Monday morning. "I'll look around and watch my surroundings, that type of thing."
