DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A community is in shock after a woman is found dead in a home several days after her alleged killer left her there.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner identified the victim early Wednesday as 35-year-old Daphne West.

Neighbors tell CBS11 the house in the 5400 block of Worth Street had recently been for sale and just got a fresh coat of paint, so they couldn't have been more surprised to learn police found a woman's body inside.

Homes being refurbished have become a common sight along Worth Street. It's something long-time residents like Warren Nash find encouraging.

"It's just done nothing but get nicer, and you know more gentrified and all that, and we don't have any problems, and all the neighbors look out for each other," Nash said.

Neighbors say a constable stopped by the home Tuesday to serve papers when a foul smell tipped him off.

After homicide detectives found West's body with clear signs of violence, they asked next door neighbor Paul Crane if he had noticed anything out of the ordinary recently.

Crane could only recall a group of strangers a few days ago who looked like they were studying the home.

"It just seemed odd. There was something about it that just seemed odd at the time," Crane says.

But that never would have led him to predict police would find a woman killed right next door to him.

"As far as violence and so forth, I hadn't really considered that that was going to be an issue, so that was a surprise," Crane said.
