DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - An elderly woman was found dead after a Dallas apartment fire late Thursday night. It happened at the Primrose Oaks Senior Apartments, located in the 2500 block of Perryton Drive.
Emergency crews were called to the scene at around 9:45 p.m. and saw heavy smoke coming from the bottom floor of a two-story building. The apartment complex, in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas, is a gated community designed for seniors.
The fire set off the building's sprinkler system, and that doused most of the flames before firefighters even arrived. But, while they were inside to make sure that the blaze was fully extinguished, workers found the body of the elderly woman inside of an apartment unit.
The victim has not yet been identified. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
This was initially reported as a police investigation, but firefighters eventually took over the lead. Officials have not said why this started as a police case. The Dallas County Medical Examiner's office is expected to release the victim's official cause of death later on Friday.
