Woman At Center Of Amber Alert Arrested In Fort Worth
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Police have confirmed that the Texas woman at the center of an Amber Alert for abducting her two grandchildren from the Nacogdoches area on Thursday has been arrested in Fort Worth.
Police had been searching for Bonnie Miller, a 48-year-old woman believed to have been driving a gray-colored, 4-door, 2005 Honda Accord EX. Fort Worth Police Department officers made the first break in the case Friday.
"This afternoon shortly before three o'clock Fort Worth PD located the vehicle," Houston County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy G.P. Shearer explained.
After locating the vehicle officers found the woman and her grandchildren in a house next door, hiding under a tarp. "The kids are okay. Everybody's fine. Everybody's safe," Shearer said. "Unfortunately for the grandmother she's arrested now with two counts of Kidnapping."
Local police confirmed to CBS 11 News that Miller was taken into custody in a residential area, around 3:30 p.m. It isn't known if the house where she was arrested is that of a relative or friend.
Miller's grandchildren, two-year-old Nevaeh Kimora Simpson and Jordan Malik Simpson, age one, are safe and now in police custody. Officials say the children's father is headed to Fort Worth to get the children.
An Amber Alert was issued Thursday afternoon for Miller. Authorities had advised that the 48-year-old woman had relatives in the Garland area.
Nevah and Jordan Simpson's mother died at a North Texas hospital in December from an unknown illness. She and the father of the two children were not living together, and she had custody of the kids.
After her death, a court eventually ended up giving the father custody. Miller's family told CBS 11 Friday evening her daughter wanted the children to stay with their grandmother, and that Miller was trying to honor her later daughter's wishes.
Miller's brother told CBS 11 Miller and the girls had been staying with him for a week already. The family says she had reached out to an attorney to help her win custody, but police got to her first.
The Houston County Sheriff's Office said this case warranted an Amber Alert because Miller had made comments that she had a gun and that left them concerned for her safety and for the children.
