WNBA Debuts 'Ref Cam' For Television Audience

The "Ref Cam" Debuts in Indiana by WNBA on YouTube

INDIANAPOLIS (CBSDFW.COM) -- The WNBA debuted a new camera on Saturday mounted on the head of game official Lamont Simpson. The camera, which has mounted above his right ear on a device that looked like a pair of glasses, provided a unique view of the game for the television audience.

"The use of Ref Cam certainly offered a previously unseen point of view that really brought viewers into the action, adding a whole new visual and audio component to the experience," said WNBA President Laurel Richie.

Simpson, who agreed to wear the device for the game between the Phoenix Mercury and Indiana Fever, struggled with the bulky equipment in the first half.

"It was fun. We made some adjustments at halftime and the second half it was almost like it wasn't there," he said.

The camera, developed by Broadcast Sports Inc., had been previously worn in a European rugby game as well as an MLS reserve league contest.
