Witness, Victim's Family Member At Deadly Crash

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The head on collision left an SUV mangled and nearly unrecognizable. Flames engulfed the vehicle, with its driver trapped inside.
"I was across the street and I could feel the heat from the fire," said David Edmond, a witness. He was driving behind a silver pick up truck traveling westbound on E. Lancaster, near Boswell Drive.
The SUV was traveling eastbound. Fort Worth police say the pickup truck crossed into the opposite lane, crashing head on into the SUV.
"Based on what witness said they observed the Chevy pickup driving on the wrong side of the street for unknown reasons and that's when the head on collision happened," explained Officer Daniel Segura with Fort Worth Police.
Edmond says witnesses rushed to help, pulling a child out of the pickup.
"When they pulled her out she was standing on the side of the road just hollering, 'mommy, mommy!,' and I assume that was her mother driving the truck," he said. First responders worked to extricate the female driver pinned inside the truck. Both she and the child were rushed to area hospitals in critical condition.
Witnesses say a Good Samaritan tried to help the man in the burning SUV.
"They were telling him he couldn't go by the fire," says Edmond.
The male driver of the SUV did not survive.
It was a long walk back from a police patrol car for a woman fearing the worst.
"He did not come to pick up his sons from my mother's," explains Brenda Wright.
Raw emotions took over as Wright waited to learn if the SUV involved belonged to her son-in-law. She says this is the route he would have taken to pick up his children.
Late Tuesday night, Wright said the family had confirmed her son-in-law was the driver of the SUV.
"He's the best dad in the world. He had two young boys that thought the world of him, and brought light into my daughter's life," she said.
