Winter Weather Disrupts Travel at DFW Airport
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) -It was a tough day for a lot of travelers at DFW Airport Thursday. As the icy weather moved in, the problems for travelers increased. Some planes were taking off and landing, but a whole lot more were going nowhere.
Friday was expected to be even worse. As of 10:00pm Thursday, the display boards at the airport showed many flights that were delayed or cancelled. In all, CBS 11 saw about 175 flights listed as cancelled.
Two hundred departures - about 20% - have already been scrapped on Friday in anticipation of the bad weather. Most of those cancelled flights were set for early Friday morning.
According to DFW officials, as of Friday evening, runways and taxiways were still in good condition and every flight leaving the airport was being de-iced.
But with so many precautionary cancellations, still some travelers have been left struggling to get out. "I had a 6:05 flight that got cancelled," said traveler Lindy Watts. "Then the 7:40 flight got cancelled. Now the next one is 10:20. So, we'll see if it gets cancelled."
Another traveler, MaryAnn Zacharia, was able to book a flight, but at a price. "American Airlines just got $900 bucks out of me for a first class ticket from here to Phoenix." She said that was the only seat left on the two hour flight.
Airlines and airport officials recommend that travelers flying on Friday check flight status - and check often.
American Airlines has said they are waiving some flight change fees for those travelers who wish to reschedule.
