Wilmer-Hutchins Schools Reopen After Shutdown
WILMER (CBSDFW.COM) - It is not just another school year for families in southern Dallas County. It is a new era.
Schools in the cities of Wilmer and Hutchins reopened on Monday after being forced to shut down six years ago. Families in this area are overjoyed to have their schools back, including the brand new Wilmer-Hutchins Elementary School.
Back in 2005, the Wilmer-Hutchins Independent School District was shut down because of poor performance and financial problems. The Dallas Independent School District took over operations, and the 2,000 students had to ride buses to 13 schools acrosst the DISD.
Now, three schools in the Wilmer-Hutchins area open for classes. Kennedy-Curry Middle School and Wilmer-Hutchins High School have both been renovated. Meanwhile, Wilmer-Hutchins Elementary School is the area's first new school in more than 30 years.
With these new and renovated buildings, there is new hope that students in these schools can be successful, as the children can return to schools in their own communities.
