Willie Booked Along Border For Pot Charge

SIERRA BLANCA, Texas (AP) -- A U.S. Border Patrol spokesman says country singer Willie Nelson was held after 6 ounces of marijuana was found aboard his tour bus.

The bus pulled into the Sierra Blanca checkpoint about 9 a.m. Friday. An officer smelled marijuana when a door was opened. Bill Brooks, spokesman for the Marfa sector of the Border Patrol, said a search turned up marijuana.

Brooks said the Hudspeth County sheriff was contacted, and three people, including Nelson, were arrested.

A sheriff's dispatcher said no one was available to comment until Monday. Sheriff Arvin West did not immediately return a phone message left at his home.

West told the El Paso Times that Nelson claimed the marijuana was his, and he was booked on a $2,500 bond on the possession charge and later released.

Nelson spokeswoman Elaine Schock had no comment.
