Why Sunday Night Really Matters

DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) - In DC, it's "Dallas Week." In DFW, it's "Fail to the Deadskins." I grew up listening to one, and now cover the other.

The most important thing about Cowboys-Skins Sunday night isn't the playoff implications. It's a chance to take us back in time, when this game used to deliver goosebumps. I still get them when remembering shaking stands at RFK, chants of "WE WANT DALLAS," the triplets vs the Posse, Gibbs, Jimmy and George Allen, the Hogs vs the Hats.

There's nothing better in sports than a true, bitter rivalry, and the ones today blow.

The most common question I get from fan fans is "how can you work on the home of the Cowboys while being a Redskins fan? GO BACK TO DC!!"

It's simple. I can't stand fake people. I don't like doing things because I'm told it's the way it should be. No, tradition has to make sense for me to blindly follow.

Think about this for a sec: I'm 31 years old. The Redskins haven't won the NFC East since 1999. They haven't made the PLAYOFFS since 2007. As we all know, they haven't been relevant. The overwhelming majority of Dan Snyder's tenure has been a big, fat burgundy and gold joke. In my eyes, when you're not relevant, you can't have meaningful rivalries because the games don't count for anything. What truly great memories do we have of Cowboys-Redskins after the 90's? Brunell hitting Moss twice in 05? The Tashard fumble in 2010? At my age, how the hell am I supposed to hate the Cowboys from that? I can't, so I don't. But I want too....

The Giants and Eagles can go screw each other. Sunday Night is what it's really supposed to be about in the NFC East. The Division crown will be nice, but what I really want from this game is a trip back in time. I want a return to the hatred and bitterness I grew up with. I want the actual stakes to mean EVERYTHING is on the line. I want the goosebumps again.
