I Don't Think Nolan Is Headed To Houston
SURPRISE, Ariz. (CBSDFW.COM) - "If I was in Houston right now and you said 'What do you think, Nolan?' I'd be saying, God, is this season ever gonna be over? I got my truck warmed up, I'm headed to the ranch."
That was the response Rangers CEO Nolan Ryan said with a smile when Mark McLemore and I asked him about his tenure with the Rangers during our August 24th pregame show prior to the Rangers/Twins game. At the time, Ryan indicated he didn't see an end to his time with the Rangers in sight.
Granted, this was all before Fort Worth Star-Telegram columnist Randy Galloway shocked the Ranger nation with his assertion that Ryan could be headed for an ugly exit from the organization by the end of spring training. A speculate next stop: the Houston Astros who are looking to rebuild their baseball credibility with new ownership. Bringing Ryan on board could do just that.
I will say that every discussion I've had with Ryan about the Astros (and there have been a few) has indicated he would not want a role with the franchise. Minds can change, no doubt. Situations evolve, like the promotion of Jon Daniels to Rangers President of Baseball Operations/GM. But if Ryan IS headed for a departure from the Rangers, I don't think he'll land in Houston. I think his beloved ranch will be that destination, not the hot mess that is the Astros.
We will have much more on Nolan Ryan and the Texas Rangers tonight on the Fan Sports Show at 6:30 on TXA21.
