Whooping Cough Reaches Outbreak Level In Texas
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Whooping cough has reached an outbreak level in the state. More than 1600 cases of the deadly, dangerous virus are reported.
There are 350 cases of pertussis in Tarrant County. If the prevalence of the disease continues to spread this rate, Texas will have its highest number of cases in more than half a century.
Pertussis, in its early stages, mimics the common cold. It is often not suspected or diagnosed until the more-severe symptoms appear. Symptoms can include fits of rapid, high-pitched coughs, vomiting, and exhaustion.
Antibiotics can shorten the amount of time a patient is contagious.
Doctors across the metroplex strongly urge people to get vaccinated.
