*During his 13 seasons as defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Monte Kiffin finished in Top 10 11 times and averaged 39 sacks, 19 interceptions and 12 fumble recoveries. The Cowboys this season were last in the league with 7 picks. But I'm almost against the Cowboys hiring him because he raised such an asshole of a son.
*In Rob Ryan's 32 games as the Cowboys' defensive coordinator, his unit held opponents under 14 points exactly 4 times.
*Why the Mavs are going nowhere fast this season. In last night's win in Sacramento they led by 3 with 9 seconds remaining and inexplicably double-teamed DeMarcus Cousins in the paint, leading to an overtime-forcing 3-pointer. Dallas can beat the Kings with a low basketball IQ, but not many other teams.
*Trying to have a discussion about murders without talking about guns is akin to talking about lung cancer without mentioning cigarettes. They are both instruments of death.
*To be clear, Kiffin resigned from USC after this season to return to the NFL. But what a horrible send-off. The Trojans finished 40th in scoring defense and surrendered 730 yards to Oregon.

*Jason Garrett is 21-19 and has taken the Cowboys to two NFC East championship games in 2 ½ seasons. Not good enough?
*The State of Texas has a budget surplus of $8.8 Billion. Teacher crisis = Solved. Right? Hire them today. Give them raises tomorrow.
*Can't believe there are actually Americans who believe the Shady Hook Elementary and Aurora theater shootings were a hoax. Think of how many folks would have to be involved to keep that conspiracy quiet. And, quite the price to pay for his role by Colorado shooter James Holmes. I like to look at things from every possible angle, but come on.
*With all the hot, young "reporters" appearing on NFL sidelines, how the hell is Leslie Visser still around?
*NBC5 sports' Matt Barrie is leaving the nurturing bosom of Newy Scruggs to join ESPN in Bristol. Not sure if that's a promotion, but congrats nonetheless.
*Deion Sanders says of proposed child-support to ex-wife Pilar: "I can't afford this mess." Seen his house in Prosper?
*Won't be the same without Rafael Nadal, who hasn't played since Wimbledon because of various ailments, but one of my favorite sporting events of the year begins Sunday Down Under with the Australian Open. Lots of late-night/early-morning tennis and my annual chance to make travel plans to Melbourne, on my bucket list of destinations.
*If you're Jonesing for pitchers and catchers to report, the Rangers' annual Fan Fest is this weekend at the Ballpark.
*With a 70-year-old owner and 72-year-old defensive coordinator, yes, it's fair to call the Cowboys the Jerry-atrics.
*Fan Bowl is back - Defending champion: Yours truly.
*The new Perot Museum not far from AAC includes a Sports Hall. In it there is an interactive exhibit which measures how high patrons can jump. A man tried it last week, caught his ring on the contraction and had the finger ripped off. Seriously.
*If you need a Cowboys infusion to find a team to root for in NFL Playoffs, you can choose the Broncos (Chris Gronkowski and Keith Brooking), 49ers (Leonard Davis and Billy Cundiff) or Texans (Bradie James and Alan Ball.)
*NFL Divisional Weekend winners: Broncos, Packers, Seahawks and Patriots. Take it from a guy who was 4-0 last weekend.
*This weekend? Saturday morning we'll get back into some tennis and Saturday night a surprise birthday party for a hottie hitting 30. Sunday morningafternoon Sybil, Jasmine and Fox4 Fiona are dragging the guys to something called "brunch," where all we demand on the buffet is a TV to watch the NFL Playoffs. Don't be a stranger.
