WHITESBORO (CBSDFW.COM) - As storms rolled in Tuesday night North Texans rushed to get to their safe places, but the strong winds and possible tornadoes were too strong for some. Damage in the city of Whitesboro seems to be limited one area, but it is significant.
Some of the most devastating damage in Whitesboro is compressed in a two or three square block area. There are several houses, all in a row, that have major roof damage.
Winds in the area were so high that a storage business was damaged after being hit by all of the debris that blew off of nearby homes.
A medical clinic in the city actually had the roof blown, leaving lumber, insulation and other debris strewn throughout the neighborhood.
Whitesboro resident LaWanda Cunningham looked at the damage in her area and was amazed her neighbor's house was damaged and her house was untouched. "I'm very blessed... very blessed! The good Lord is looking after me I guess. He has his ways."
Power lines appeared to have been blown down in the yard of one home. Electric crews – working around debris in yards and streets - were out late last night and this morning restoring power in the area.
Officials with the Grayson Collin Electric Cooperative said that as of 8:45 a.m. electrical service had been restored to some 13,300 accounts in the area and crews were still on site trying to restore power to the more than 2,000 still in the dark.
In addition to damage from high winds and suspected tornadoes, there was also flooding in a low-lying area on the outskirts of Whitesboro.
Highs winds either completely uprooted large trees or snapped them in half.
Surveyors with the National Weather Service are expected to arrive sometime today to determine if there was true tornadic activity in the area. They'll be looking at things like how debris is spread out to get an indication of whether the wind was spinning – i.e. if a tornado touched down.
