White House, Texas Dems Tout Health Care Overhaul
AUSTIN (AP) — The White House and Texas Democrats are touting the health care overhaul and calling on Republican leaders to expand coverage for the poor.
Obama administration adviser David Simas led a conference call Monday with San Antonio Democrat Trey Martinez Fischer and Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins to talk about the benefits of the Affordable Care Act.
Simas said that more than 10.6 million Texans can no longer be denied coverage based on pre-existing conditions, but said he couldn't say how many Texans have signed up for coverage using the troubled website Healthcare.gov.
Martinez Fischer accused Gov. Rick Perry and other Republican leaders of blocking the expansion of Medicaid, which would provide coverage to 1.2 million uninsured.
Perry and other top Republicans remain adamantly opposed to expanding government health care.
