West Nile Virus Back In North Texas

NORTH TEXAS(CBSDFW.COM) - A mosquito pool in Frisco has tested positive for West Nile Virus. The City of Frisco is responding swiftly. Crews will apply larvicide and spray for mosquitoes starting Friday.
And we learned late Thursday night a mosquito pool in Mesquite in the 75150 zip code also tested positive according to Dallas County Health and Human Services
No human cases are confirmed in North Texas.
Weather permitting in Frisco, a third party contractor will treat with larvicide and spray using a 'back pack' Friday, May 22 beginning at 6 p.m. through 9 p.m.
The areas to be treated include a section of the Frisco Lakes' golf course and a nearby wooded area that leads to Lake Lewisville. The golf course section is being targeted because it includes ponds without water features. Click here to view a map. (Targeted area is outlined in blue.)
"Without water features, the ponds don't circulate and have greater potential for attracting mosquitoes," said Julie Stallcup, Environmental Health Supervisor. "We anticipated the mosquito season would be even more challenging this year give all the recent rains. We can't stress enough how important it is to practice 'The Four D's'."
- DRAIN all standing water;
- DRESS in light-colored, long sleeve clothing when outdoors;
- DEET…Use mosquito repellants that contain Deet;
- DUSK OR DAWN…Avoid outdoor activities during these hours when mosquitoes are most active.
In accordance with its plan, Frisco began testing for mosquitoes May 1.
