Week Starts Wet Across North Texas
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Severe weather rolled across the Metroplex early Monday morning to greet commuters. There have been numerous reports of one-inch hail, some wind damage in Venus (Johnson County) and a few transformers being knocked out. The heavy rain – around an inch to an inch and a half over a short period of time – also caused some minor street flooding in and around the Metroplex.
Wet roads and gusty winds also created difficult road conditions for early morning drivers.
This was the first big rain event that North Texas has seen over the past 43 days. While it was not enough to stop the area drought, the free water was certainly well-received. Those storms are now moving out of the area and off to the east, but strong winds will remain.
North Texas is under a Red Flag Warning until 8:00 p.m. Monday, as a northwest wind holds at around 20 to 25 mph, with gusts getting up to 45 mph in some places. This cooler air will keep high temperatures only in the 60s on Monday, but the sunshine will make it look warmer.
Were you awake at 3:00 a.m. Monday morning? If so, perhaps you felt the 70-degree temperature. That will actually be Monday's high reading. Those temperatures got swept away with the cold front that brought rain into North Texas. And expect to jump back to the heater on Monday night, as winds calm, skies clear and temperatures drop down to the low 40s in the DFW Metro area. Northern area counties will get down into the upper 30s. This cold weather will not last long, however.
North Texas will start to warm up again rather quickly. Look for high temperatures to reach into the 70s on Tuesday afternoon and into the 80s on Wednesday. Then for race weekend at the Texas Motor Speedway, high temperatures might hit 90 degrees.
But the rain might not be over yet. There is a slight storm chance – only about 20 percent coverage – for the area on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. None of these days should see a widespread rain event, but the storms, if they strike, could dampen the race weekend spirit just a bit.
