WEATHERFORD (CBSDFW.COM) - A police chase early Monday ended with a crash and a roadway being closed for several hours. The incident started when officers from the Weatherford Police Department were called to a home in the 2100 block of Holly Oaks Lane.
Police arrived shortly before 1:30 a.m. to investigate reports of a suicidal man who was armed with a weapon. However, the man had already left the scene. He was described as a 23-year-old white male driving a maroon Dodge truck.
Authorities located that vehicle near the intersection of Highway 180 and Lakeshore Drive in Hudson Oaks, located just to the east of Weatherford. Officers attempted to stop the driver, but he sped away heading east, leading the police on a short chase.
The driver ultimately veered off of the roadway, striking a guardrail and a cement pillar along Interstate-20 at FM 1187 near Aledo. Investigators stated that the crash trapped the suspect in his vehicle until firefighters arrived to assist in the rescue effort. Workers also had to clean up a fuel spill that resulted from the crash.
The suspect was taken to JPS Hospital in Fort Worth with only minor injuries. The case is still under investigation and criminal charges are pending.
A portion of the interstate was shut down for hours while investigators and cleanup crews were at the scene. The Texas Department of Transportation also inspected the area to make sure that it was safe for other drivers. The road has since been opened back up to regular traffic.
