Wayward Wallaby Back Home
GRAND PRAIRIE (CBSDFW.COM) - The sight of a one year old wallaby bouncing across a lawn is not one most people ever expect to ever see.
"I was certainly surprised when I came out this morning," said John Richardson, of Grand Prairie.
He was headed to work when he saw police circling the animal on his front porch.
"Some gentleman had lassoed it, and they were all standing back quite a bit 'cause they weren't sure, if it was someone's pet or if it was actually a wild kangaroo running around."
Just over a mile away, David Churchill was house sitting for his in-laws and realized Wall-E, the family's pet wallaby was missing.
"He doesn't know what to do on the streets out here. Thank god, he didn't get hit," said Churchill.
"I was super worried. Whenever he called me and told me, I was like, no. I was afraid," said his sister-in-law, Bethany Bancroft.
The owners' children believe someone may have tried to get through the gate, allowing Wall-E to escape.
Animal control was able to capture him and contact the family.
"It was the first time they had a wallaby there. Everybody was taking pictures with him," said Bancroft's boyfriend, Korey Truelock, who returned Wall-E home.
Grand Prairie Animal Services say, since they've never encountered a wallaby, they plan to research whether it's legal to own one and what requirements an owner must meet.
The department says, there have never been complaints against the animal and that he seemed very docile to them.
