Want-To-Be Homeowners Camp Out For Lots In McKinney

MCKINNEY (CBSDFW.COM) - If you haven't heard, there are people waiting in line and camping out to buy homes in one Collin County city.

Apparently getting the house you want has turned into a competition in McKinney. There is no shortage of residential construction in McKinney, or the other cities of Plano, Frisco and Allen. But for some people taking the extra step of lining up, sometimes days in advance, is perfectly reasonable.

It isn't just the location that is attracting buyers. One prospective home-buyer explained, "The cities up here, whether it's McKinney, Frisco, or even Prosper, they focus on families. You know, everywhere you turn there's a park [and] the schools themselves are really high quality."

First Texas Homes offered 'first come first sold' deals for a new northwest McKinney development. Amer Sheikh paid special attention to the 'first come' part of that advertisement and was in line, with about two dozen others, at 5 a.m. "My main goal was to get the lot I want. They're all good lots, but some stand out, so we'll give it a shot."

The Prestwyck Phase II development has about 80 lots available for sale. Potential buyers say price and design flexibility attracted them to the homes.

Of the 155,000 people calling McKinney home today, 101,000 of them lived somewhere else just over a decade ago. The growth pace means some 5,000 single-family homes have been built in the past three years alone.
